1. Robert Mondavi Winery
Robert Mondavi (1913-2008) was a pioneering figure in the American wine industry and is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential winemakers of the 20th century. He founded Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa Valley, California, in 1966, and dedicated his life to promoting the quality of California wines and raising their international reputation.
Robert Mondavi was born into a family of Italian immigrants who had a passion for winemaking. His father operated a winery in Lodi, California, and Robert began working in the family business at a young age. However, after a falling out with his brother, he left the family winery and struck out on his own.
Mondavi was a visionary who saw the potential for California wines to rival the best wines of Europe. He believed that winemaking was an art form and that the key to producing great wine was to start with the best quality grapes. To this end, he introduced new viticultural practices to California, including planting vines in high-density rows, using trellises to control the growth of the vines, and introducing irrigation techniques to manage the vines’ water supply.
Under Mondavi’s leadership, Robert Mondavi Winery quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality wines. He was a passionate advocate for the California wine industry and worked tirelessly to promote the region’s wines to the rest of the world. He was also instrumental in establishing the Napa Valley as a premier wine region and in raising the profile of American wines on the global stage.
The winery’s estate vineyards cover over 400 acres and are located in some of the most prestigious growing regions in Napa Valley, including To Kalon Vineyard, which is widely regarded as one of the finest vineyards in the world. The winery uses sustainable and biodynamic farming practices to cultivate the grapes, which are carefully selected and handpicked to ensure the highest quality.
Specialty Wine and Food Pairing Experience
Robert Mondavi Winery produces a range of wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and more. The winery is perhaps best known for its flagship wine, the Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, which is made from the finest grapes from the To Kalon Vineyard and aged in French oak barrels for 18 to 20 months.
In addition to producing exceptional wines, Robert Mondavi Winery is also committed to providing an immersive and educational wine experience for visitors. The winery offers a range of tours and tastings, including a signature tour that takes visitors through the winemaking process from grape to glass. The winery also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including concerts, wine dinners, and more.
Mondavi was also a philanthropist who believed in giving back to his community. He established the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science at the University of California, Davis, and was a supporter of many other charitable causes.

2. Opus One Winery
Opus One Winery, located in Oakville, is a joint venture between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, a French winemaker and aristocrat who was instrumental in revolutionizing the wine industry in the Bordeaux region of France.
Baron Philippe inherited the family business, Chateau Mouton Rothschild, in 1922, and he quickly set about improving the quality of the wine produced there. He introduced new winemaking techniques and modernized the vineyard management practices to ensure that the grapes were of the highest quality. He also worked to establish the reputation of the Bordeaux region, traveling extensively to promote the wines and build relationships with distributors and wine enthusiasts around the world.
Baron Philippe was also an innovator in the marketing of wine. He was the first winemaker to put a vintage date on the label of every bottle, a practice that is now common in the industry. He also introduced the concept of artist-designed wine labels, commissioning famous artists such as Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso to create labels for Chateau Mouton Rothschild.
Throughout his life, Baron Philippe was recognized for his contributions to the wine industry. He was awarded the Legion of Honor by the French government, and in 1975, he became the first person from the wine industry to be inducted into the Academie des Beaux-Arts.
He and Robert Mondavi shared a vision of producing world-class wines that would rival the best wines of Bordeaux, and Opus One was the result of their collaboration. Today, Opus One is one of the most highly regarded wineries in the world. His legacy lives on today through the exceptional wines produced at Chateau Mouton Rothschild and Opus One, as well as through his enduring influence on the wine industry as a whole.
Opus One Winery’s signature wine, Opus One, is a Bordeaux-style blend that is widely considered one of the world’s greatest wines.
One of the unique features of Opus One Winery is its vineyards, which span across 100 acres of prime Napa Valley land. The vineyards are managed using sustainable and biodynamic farming practices, which help to preserve the natural environment and produce high-quality grapes. The winery’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond the vineyards and includes initiatives to reduce waste, conserve water, and minimize energy use.
Opus One Winery also stands out for its commitment to innovation and experimentation in winemaking. The winery’s research and development team is constantly exploring new techniques and technologies to improve the quality and consistency of its wines. For example, the winery uses optical sorting machines to remove defective grapes from the harvest, resulting in a higher quality of fruit.
The winery’s unique architecture, designed by renowned architect Scott Johnson, is modeled after a French chateau and features a central atrium with a circular staircase leading to a barrel-aging cellar. The winery’s tasting room is also unique, featuring a large circular table where guests can enjoy tastings while overlooking the vineyards.
3. Chateau Montelena
Chateau Montelena Winery, located in Calistoga, is one of our favorite Napa Valley Wineries. Chateau Montelena gained international fame when its 1973 Chardonnay beat out several renowned French wines in the infamous 1976 Judgment of Paris blind tasting.

The winery’s signature wine, the Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, is known for its elegant, complex flavors and is highly sought after by collectors. Visitors to the winery can enjoy tastings of the winery’s award-winning wines in the beautiful, ivy-covered tasting room, which overlooks the estate vineyards.
Originally established in 1882 by Alfred L. Tubbs, a San Francisco entrepreneur. During the Prohibition era, the winery was forced to shut down, and it remained abandoned for several decades. In 1968, a group of investors led by Jim Barrett purchased the property and restored the vineyard and winery to its former glory.
Today, Chateau Montelena, one of the most welcoming wineries in Napa, is still family-owned and operated, with Jim Barrett’s son Bo Barrett at the helm. Chateau Montelena is known for two things: its exceptional Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon; Bo being one of, if not the most genuine, down-to-earth good natured players in Napa Valley.
The winery’s estate vineyards cover 120 acres and are planted with a variety of grape varieties, including Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Riesling. The winery uses sustainable farming practices, and the grapes are handpicked and carefully sorted to ensure the highest quality.
Visitors to Chateau Montelena can enjoy a range of experiences, including tours of the winery and vineyards, tastings of the winery’s current releases, and private tastings of library wines. The winery also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including wine dinners, concerts, and more.
4. Stag’s Leap
Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, located in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley, also gained international fame at the 1976 Judgment of Paris blind tasting competition, when its 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon won, beating out several renowned French wines.
The winery’s signature wine, the Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon, is named after the Greek goddess of the hunt and is known for its rich, complex flavors.
The winery’s tasting room features stunning views of the vineyards and the surrounding mountains, and visitors can enjoy tastings in a cozy, intimate setting.
5. Darioush Winery
Darioush Winery, located in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley, is known for its stunning Persian-inspired architecture and its rich, full-bodied wines.
The winery’s owner, Darioush Khaledi, was born in Iran and wanted to pay tribute to his cultural heritage with the winery’s design.
The winery’s tasting room features intricate tilework, hand-carved stone, and a beautiful water feature.
Visitors can enjoy tastings of the winery’s signature Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Chardonnay in a luxurious, welcoming environment.
6. Sterling Vineyards
Sterling Vineyards, located in Calistoga, is known for its stunning hilltop location and its unique aerial tramway that takes visitors up to the winery.
The winery’s Mediterranean-style architecture features white stucco walls, red tile roofs, and stunning views of the surrounding vineyards and mountains.
Visitors can enjoy tastings of the winery’s diverse range of wines, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Visitors are also welcome to enjoy a self-guided tour of the winery’s facilities, including the fermentation tanks, the barrel room, and the underground aging caves.
7. Far Niente Winery
Far Niente Winery, located in Oakville, is known for its beautifully restored 19th-century stone winery and its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
The winery was founded in 1885 and was abandoned during Prohibition before being restored to its former glory in the late 1970s.
Visitors to the winery can take a guided tour of the historic winery, which includes the original stone cellars, and can enjoy tastings of the winery’s award-winning wines in a beautiful, peaceful setting.
8. Clos Pegase Winery
Clos Pegase Winery, located in the Calistoga AVA, is known for its stunning architecture, designed by renowned architect Michael Graves and inspired by the ancient Greek myth of the winged horse Pegasus.
The winery features a stunning central courtyard with a reflecting pool and a sculpture garden.
The winery produces a wide range of wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Noir.
Besides outstanding wines, Clos Pegase stands out for us as one of our favorites is the outstanding landscape design. A beautiful Xeriscaped front entrance with an abundance of beautiful cacti and other succulents in a ground cover of pea gravel is a visually stunning and pleasant contrast to the greenery of the vines and surrounding mountains.
Visitors can enjoy tastings in the winery’s beautiful tasting room or on the outdoor terrace, which offers stunning views of the surrounding vineyards and mountains.
9. Jarvis Estate
Jarvis Estate, located in the Napa Valley AVA, is known for its innovative winemaking techniques and its stunning underground winery, which was carved into the side of a hill.

The winery’s owner, William Jarvis, was inspired by the ancient wine cellars of Europe and wanted to create a winery that would be both environmentally sustainable and aesthetically pleasing.
The winery’s signature wine, the Cabernet Sauvignon, is known for its rich, full-bodied flavors and is highly sought after by collectors.
Visitors to the winery can take a guided tour of the underground winery, which includes a visit to the fermentation rooms, the barrel-aging cellar, and the tasting room.
